How Often Should PAT Testing Be Carried Out?
A practical guide to PAT testing frequency for offices, schools, hospitality businesses, venues and specialist event equipment.
There is no single PAT testing interval that applies to every appliance in every environment. The right frequency depends on the type of equipment, how often it is used, the environment it is used in and the level of risk involved.
For example, a kettle in a busy staff kitchen may justify a different inspection interval from a rarely used monitor in a controlled office setting. Event and entertainment equipment can also require a different testing pattern because of transport, repeated setup and pack-down, and more varied usage conditions.

Risk matters more than a fixed rule
Portable appliance testing frequency is often based on risk rather than a blanket calendar rule. Equipment used daily, moved regularly, exposed to demanding conditions or handled by lots of different people will often justify more frequent inspection.
A more static item in a lower-risk environment may not need the same schedule. That is why sensible PAT testing programmes are based on equipment type and real use rather than guesswork.
