What is Portable Appliance Testing?

Understanding PAT testing and why it matters.

Portable appliance testing is the process of inspecting and testing electrical equipment to help confirm it remains safe to use. It normally includes a visual inspection, formal electrical testing where appropriate, labelling and detailed record keeping.

PAT testing can apply to everything from office kettles, monitors and extension leads through to venue equipment, DJ controllers, lighting, amplifiers, photo booths and distribution equipment. For many businesses, portable appliance testing forms an important part of a broader health and safety and compliance approach.

Why is PAT Testing Important?

Compliance, safety and risk reduction all matter.

PAT testing helps businesses manage electrical safety responsibilities in a practical way. It supports risk reduction, helps identify damaged or unsafe equipment and can assist with internal compliance procedures.

It is also often relevant when considering the Electricity at Work Regulations, insurance expectations, workplace safety requirements and the need to show that electrical equipment is being maintained responsibly. For businesses with large asset lists or customer-facing environments, well documented portable appliance testing can be especially valuable.

Built by a PAT tester

Software shaped by real testing experience.

CEPAT was designed and developed by Eri Martin, an experienced Portable Appliance Tester with first hand knowledge of the industry.

Rather than building software from theory, CEPAT has been developed around real testing workflows, making inspections faster, improving record keeping and helping businesses maintain compliance.

Every feature has been influenced by practical experience carrying out portable appliance testing across a wide range of industries.

Specialist Event Equipment Testing

Manufacturer-appropriate testing for sensitive professional equipment.

Portable appliance testing is not simply a case of plugging every appliance into a tester and pressing start. Many items of professional entertainment equipment require testing in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Applying inappropriate test voltages to sensitive electronic equipment can result in inaccurate results or, in some cases, damage to the equipment.

At CEPAT, we understand the difference. Our experience within the events industry means we carry out portable appliance testing using the appropriate test methods for each appliance, ensuring equipment is tested safely whilst still verifying all required electrical safety parameters.

We Don’t Just Test Appliances

We understand how they are built, used and how they should be tested.

Having worked extensively with entertainment and event equipment, we understand how these appliances are built, how they are used and how they should be tested.

Whether testing a photo booth printer, a DJ controller, an LED dance floor, a moving head light or a professional power distribution system, each appliance is assessed individually to determine the most appropriate testing method.

This experience helps prevent inappropriate testing techniques while ensuring every appliance receives the correct inspection and electrical safety tests.

Our Testing Process

A structured portable appliance testing process from arrival to certification.

Arrival and site review

We confirm the scope of work, testing areas, access requirements and any business-specific considerations before starting.

Visual inspection

Each appliance is visually checked for damage, unsuitable wiring, loose parts, incorrect fuses and other common safety issues.

Electrical testing

Where appropriate, appliances are tested using professional PAT testing equipment with the correct method selected according to the equipment type, recognised PAT testing practice and manufacturer guidance where available.

Labelling and identification

Appliances are labelled and logged to support traceability, future inspections and clearer asset management.

Functional testing

Where appropriate, we also power equipment and check that it operates as intended so faults such as damaged displays, non-functioning controls or intermittent operation can be identified.

Digital certificates and asset register

All inspections are documented through CEPAT with digital PAT certificates, asset records and recommendations.

Recommendations

Where issues are found, we provide clear recommendations so businesses can take appropriate corrective action.

Functional Testing

Electrical safety testing is only part of the inspection.

Where appropriate, we also carry out functional testing by powering equipment and checking that it operates as intended. This allows us to identify faults that electrical testing alone cannot detect, such as damaged displays, non functioning controls, intermittent operation or other defects that may affect safe use.

Our inspection process combines detailed visual inspection, manufacturer appropriate electrical testing, earth continuity testing where applicable, insulation resistance or alternative leakage testing where appropriate, polarity checks, functional live testing and professional digital certification.

This provides a more comprehensive inspection than relying on automatic tester results alone.

Guides and advice

Why This Matters

A more considered approach to portable appliance testing.

Many PAT testing companies use the automatic test programmes built into their tester for every appliance. While this may be suitable for many standard electrical items, specialist electronic equipment often requires a more considered approach.

Our experience working with event and entertainment equipment means we understand how different appliances should be tested, helping to protect valuable equipment whilst ensuring it remains compliant with current guidance and manufacturer recommendations.

Rather than relying solely on automatic testing, every appliance is assessed individually to ensure the correct testing procedure is used. That is one of the clearest differences between a general PAT testing service and a company that genuinely understands specialist equipment.

Using CEPAT during every inspection

The platform supports every job from start to finish.

Every inspection is managed using CEPAT, our own cloud based PAT testing platform. This provides accurate digital records, detailed reporting, asset management and professional test certificates, ensuring every inspection is fully documented.
