What Is PAT Testing?

Portable appliance testing, often shortened to PAT testing, is the process of inspecting and testing electrical appliances to help confirm they remain safe to use. In practice, it normally combines a detailed visual inspection, electrical testing where appropriate, clear labelling and professional record keeping.
For many businesses, PAT testing forms part of a wider electrical safety and compliance approach. Offices, schools, hospitality venues, care environments, warehouses and entertainment businesses often have a large number of portable appliances in regular use, and keeping records organised matters just as much as carrying out the inspection itself.

What counts as a portable appliance?
A portable appliance is usually any electrical item that can be moved and connected to the electrical supply with a plug. That can include kettles, monitors, extension leads, printers, computer equipment, power supplies, speakers, amplifiers, lighting equipment and many other everyday items.
In specialist industries such as events and entertainment, the list can become much more technical. DJ controllers, digital mixers, photo booth printers, LED controllers, intelligent lighting fixtures and distribution systems may all need a more considered testing approach.

What happens during PAT testing?
PAT testing is not just a case of pressing a button on a machine. A proper inspection usually starts with a visual check for damage, incorrect fuses, worn cables, loose parts, signs of overheating and other visible issues.
Where appropriate, electrical testing is then carried out to check relevant safety parameters. Equipment can also be labelled, logged and recorded in a digital asset register so the client receives clear documentation after the job is complete.
